Panchakarma Procedures

Panchakarma is the sodhana chikitsa, a special Ayurvedic treatment that eliminates toxins, rejuvenates the body, balances doshas, and restores good health.

Purvakarma (Pre Procedures)

Purvakarma is the preparatory stage of Panchakarma, designed to ready the body for the deeper cleansing therapies that follow. In Ayurveda, it is believed that toxins (ama) accumulate in tissues and channels over time, sticking to them and blocking the natural flow of energy. Purvakarma helps to loosen and mobilize these toxins, bringing them toward the digestive tract for elimination. This stage mainly consists of two important steps: Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation).

  • Snehana: Oleation therapy where medicated ghee or oils are used internally and externally. It softens the tissues, lubricates body channels, and dislodges toxins stuck inside.
  • Swedana: Herbal steam therapy given after oleation. It induces sweating, dilates body channels, and pushes the loosened toxins towards the digestive tract for elimination.

Pradhanakarma (Main Procedures)

Pradhanakarma represents the core of Panchakarma, the stage where the actual elimination of toxins takes place. These therapies are carefully selected based on the patient’s constitution (Prakriti), health condition, and the imbalance of doshas. The main aim is to remove the aggravated doshas directly from their sites of accumulation through the body’s natural excretory routes. The five primary procedures are Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (therapeutic purgation), Basti (medicated enemas), Nasya (nasal therapy), and in some traditions, Raktamokshana (bloodletting).

  • Vamana: Therapeutic vomiting to eliminate excess Kapha from the stomach and lungs, useful in asthma, chronic colds, and skin disorders.
  • Virechana: Purgation therapy that clears excess Pitta from the liver and intestines, effective in skin diseases, acidity, and digestive issues.
  • Anuvasana Basti: Oil-based enema therapy that nourishes the tissues, lubricates the colon, and balances aggravated Vata dosha.
  • Niruha Basti: Herbal decoction-based enema that detoxifies the large intestine and helps in chronic Vata and Kapha disorders.
  • Nasya: Administration of herbal oils or powders through the nostrils, cleansing toxins from the head region and improving clarity of senses.

Paschatkarma (Post Procedures)

Paschatkarma is the post-therapeutic stage of Panchakarma, focusing on recovery, rejuvenation, and long-term health maintenance. Since the body undergoes deep detoxification during the main procedures, the digestive fire (Agni) and tissues may be temporarily weakened. To restore strength and stability, Paschatkarma prescribes a carefully designed diet plan known as Sansarjana Karma. This starts with light, easily digestible foods like rice gruel and gradually transitions to a normal diet, allowing the digestive system to regain its full power.

  • Sansarjana Karma: A light and progressive diet plan to rebuild digestive strength and stabilize metabolism.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Adopting healthy daily routines, yoga, and meditation to maintain balance of doshas.
  • Disease-Specific Treatments: Personalized therapies or medicines prescribed to address any existing health conditions.
  • Rasayana (Rejuvenation): Use of herbal formulations and therapies to restore vitality, improve immunity, and slow down aging.
